In some works of literature, a character who appears briefly, or does not appear at all, is a significant presence. Choose a novel or play of literature merit and write an essay in which you show how such a character functions in the work. You may wish to discuss how the character affects action, theme, or the development of other characters.
The struggles you must take you achieve success
The House on Mango Street captures your interest as soon as you open the book. There are certain characters in this book that can appear briefly, but can hold an impact on the entire book. The mother for instance in this book, she may appear only once or twice, but the significance of her role is crucial.
As a family is moving to a new side of town, many challenges will face the family and circumstances only certain people can handle. In this novel, the mother plays a responsible and smart young woman who would watch and react to obstacles as they would come and go. Her duty wasn’t as major as Esperanza, but to teach her daughters in order to make a better life, they must work hard and earn their way to the top. The most important lesson she teaches Esperanza, was when they go outside and sit on the porch and she explains the importance of dedication and what hard work can do for someone who puts forth the effort. If an individual is content with where they are in their life time than that’s where they start from. Esperanza is ignorant and doesn’t listen to her mother till the end of the book when she comes back into the picture and tells her that she is truly a great person. As the mother and Esperanza talk about the changes the family has gone through, Esperanza realizes her attitude towards her mother changes when she realizes her mother is right all along.
Even though the mother doesn’t appear through-out the book, her significance to Esperanza and the family is important to not only as being the key of holding them together, but the inspiration to being successful.
